Greg Rubin has been named 2018 Horticulturalist of the Year by the San Diego Horticultural Society for his work with California native plants!. These are times of unprecedented water shortages, and it's only getting worse. Our philosophy is to provide clients with an ecological, ethical, and practical alternative to the typical water hogging landscape in California.

Services
At California's Own Native Landscape Design, we specialize in the design and creation of unique California native landscapes and habitat gardens. We are located in Escondido and serve the greater San Diego region, with the majority of projects in North County. Although our primary emphasis is on residential and institutional landscapes, we are currently engaged in several very successful restoration programs.
To quote Bert Wilson, owner of Las Pilitas Nursery, ecosystem restoration is defined as a planting composed of 100% California native plants with components from the pioneer, sub-climax and climax communities. The ecosystem should represent the native appearance in the 1600's, have no alien, foreign, exotic components present i.e.
Dry streambeds are one of our specialties. We like to take a drainage problem and turn it into a landscape feature. Since the site's run-off is directed through the dry stream, they become seasonal creek-beds whenever it rains or when the site is irrigated. Dry streams also help minimize and filter storm-water run-off, which is an important issue.
This is a shade woodland in Escondido (north county San Diego). Shade gardens are one of our specialties. The full shade does not mean you have to sacrifice color, as can be seen in the pink Ribes (currant) and blue Ceanothus (wild lilac). Also note the Pacific Coast iris below. Coursing through the middle of this shaded area is a seasonal creek-bed that we created.

Greg and his team engineered a beautiful back yard and garden landscape and maintained it wonderfully ever since. He is always prompt and courteous in addressing any concerns I've had from Day 1. From start to finish, I have been thoroughly pleased with the level of quality and service I've received. And - this is a biggie for me - they always clean up!
My yard has been featured in Sunset Magazine and has been a stop on the CNSP Annual Tour for the past 2 years. I love my yard & garden and I refer all my friends and family. Thanks, Greg!

A) sloppy workmanship, sprinkler system finally had to be repaired by another company after they flubbed it 3 times. Technician from that company pointed out numerous problems with the original install. b) no thought to drainage, first cut at install left my patio a lake c) poor choice of plants, deciduous trees shedding leaves onto mulch is impossible to maintain.
Many of the plants died as they weren't able to take the south facing sun. d) poor support and refusal to do warranty plant replacement. He wouldn't come out to replace all the dead plants 2 months into their 1 year warranty. The supposed periodic maintenance (which I understood had associated costs) never materialized. Calls were ignored and finally I realized they simply didn't want my business. e) generally poor design, the front yard from the start looked like a collection of weeds and it only got worse.
I had to completely redo one section. This did occur over a period of 2-4 years ago. Perhaps they've gotten better since then. If you don't have more than 50K to spend don't bother with these guys, they'll treat you like garbage.
