Spring most certainly has sprung. Each of the past days may not have felt very spring-like. But when added together as perceived by plants, the garden's calendar says Spring! The soil has drained enough to be dug, moved, or rototilled. The night temperatures have moderated. All of our perennials, trees, shrubs, and many of our early annuals and cold tolerant veggies are just waiting to get planted in your yard. Spring has begun in earnest. Happy Gardening. Bemis Farms Nursery is a progressive family run garden center, farm, nursery, and greenhouse in Spencer Massachusetts.

If we piqued your curiosity, here is a short background of Bemis Farms Nursery. With a handful of perennials and a truckload of ambition, Richard "Dick" Bemis started Bemis Farms Nursery in 1947. Using knowledge he had gained as a graduate of the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at UMASS - Amherst he grew plants in soil beds (nobody had yet started growing outdoor plants in pots) and began selling them to the public.
Information you can use. Local conditions can vary greatly. Downtown Worcester is almost a tropical paradise compared to the hills of Princeton. Paxton gets ice when the rest of us may be "enjoying" a cold rain. Every location has its own quirks, things that a national USDA Hardiness zone map will not tell you.
Plant once & enjoy for several years. Perennials have the advantage of living from year to year. In most cases they bloom for 2-4 weeks. Some of them will bloom all summer. Annuals on the other hand will bloom all summer: Bloom, Bloom, Bloom! But life is full of trade-offs. Annuals have to be replanted every year.
Twice every year, spring and fall, our New England weather stretches the limits of cold tolerance on our plants. Or maybe I should say that we as humans, try to stretch the limits of our plants to make them fit the New England weather. Some plants are more cold tolerant than others. Some even prefer colder.

If you haven't been - you're missing out. If you value organic and environmentally friendly raised plants, Bemis is the place for you. Ask for advice - the staff will know. Every plant ever purchased. the staff could always give me info on the growing habit and all sorts of stuff. Blows my mind. There is so many more good things I could say about this place, but in the end it comes down to this: I wish I'd started going here much sooner. It's just the best nursery around hands down.

A nice little nursery and place to take a stroll! I purchased a few armfulls of plants from them and I'm sad that I only learned about them this spring! They had great veggie plants and a nice set of with their perennials. I do wish they had more of a variety of shade loving perennials and perhaps a section dedicated to native plants. But they had some nice plants! I would recommend this place to anyone and I will be going back! Knowledgeable and helpful staff members too! Thanks for a nice experience!
