As native landscapers we consider it our special task and responsibility to protect the natural environment. Our landscaping designs and projects use only plants that are indigenous to the specific locale or to the local horticultural zone. Native Landscapes is a design / build landscaping company engaged principally in residential and commercial landscaping in Southeastern New York and Western Connecticut.
Founded in 1984, we've been building our reputation for thoughtful landscaping style with discerning residential and commercial clients throughout the Dutchess, Putnam and Fairfield county region.

Native Landscapes has opened a native plant garden center. We chose native plants over exotic species because natives have adapted to our soils and climate. They require less, if any, pesticides and fertilizers, are more deer resistant, and once established, are more drought tolerant. Wildlife, such as butterflies, hummingbirds and many other species of birds are attracted to native plants and depend on these plants for survival. We call this whole concept environmental landscaping. Working with nature and the environment through plants is a common sense gardening approach.

They know their plants, but don't trust their installers. We had a white spruce planted in our front yard based on the recommendations of Pete, who came out and helped us pick a spot for it. He said it's a hearty tree that the deer won't bother. And it is a lovely tree and we're looking forward to watching it grow. However, the men who planted it put it in the hole without taking it out of the burlap or even cutting any of the strings.
When I confronted them on this, they tried to tell me that it was good for the tree. I'm not a confrontational person by nature, so I let it go and resolved to research it later. All my research confirmed that they were lying, and you absolutely should remove a tree from the burlap and break up the root ball, which is how I was always taught to plant a tree.
It's so disappointing to realize you're getting such low quality of service and dishonesty. We were thinking of using them to do a water garden in the portion of our yard that's usually flooded, but based on this experience I can't say I ever plan on hiring then again nor would I recommend them to anyone for installations. UPDATE: 8 months later and the tree from Native Landscapes is dead.
Meanwhile our Christmas tree, which I planted after almost a month of being indoors in the middle of winter is thriving. I took off the burlap & broke up the root ball. Proof is in the planting I guess.

Thank you for being a friend to the Trail, for participating in the annual Earth Day celebration at the Dover MS/HS, for supporting the Warrior Hikers, for being the home base for the Harlem Valley AT. Community, and for hosting Trail Day. And that's in addition to your fine inventory of native plants, and hiking & nature-related items for sale.
