The primary reason for Midwest's purchase of The Natural Garden was to expand their native plant offerings through added species and to focus on special Local Ecotype native plants. Services
Natural Garden Natives is a collection of 280+ native plant species which, with a few exceptions, are of Local Eco-type. They are plants which occurred naturally in our region before European settlement and are genetically adapted to Illinois soil and climate conditions. Our indigenous plants are propagated from growing beds which were established in the 1970s and 1980s using seed collected with permission from wild populations located within 90 miles of St. Charles, IL.Being of Local Eco-type, they are excellent for restoration of natural areas or for establishing new prairie, wetland or woodland plantings, particularly when historically accurate populations are desired.
Midwest Goundcovers continues to grow a broad selection of Local Eco-type Natural Garden Natives. Plant availability varies throughout the season as our crops sell out and new crops mature. Easy Care- Native plants take care of themselves. Adaptability- Native plants are adapted to local conditions - dry, wet, shady, or clay. Three-season Bloom- Native plants bloom earlier in the spring and later in the fall than most cultivated plants. Animal Magnetism- Natives produce bloom, berries and seeds that are enjoyed by birds and wildlife.
A forb is an herbaceous annual, perennial or biennial that is not a grass. All plants within this category are perennials and of local ecotype propagated from seed that originated from plants within 90 miles of St. Charles, IL, unless otherwise noted. Some native flora and fauna form symbiotic relationships.
