A safe secure outdoor environment was created for the residents of the community who are affected by Alzheimer's disease. The garden provides an enclosed area that contains walking paths, ample seating opportunities and seasonal plantings. The plants are non-toxic and non-injurious. Plants, such as Butterfly Bush attract nature into the garden. There are places to sit with family and friends or by oneself. A variety of water features provide calm and soothing natural sounds.
A butterfly garden was designed and developed to support the Horticultural Therapy programs within this continuing care retirement community. A pergola provides shade and place to rest for the residents as well as their caregivers. A near-by water feature has become a 'bird washing station' for the birds who visit the garden.
The Herb Garden at Foulkeways was created to provide fresh herbs for the meals of the residents of the senior living community. The newly renovated dining facilities offered an opportunity to look out into the garden areas. It was important that the elders of the community could make the connection between their meals and the garden.
Gift of Life Family House serves as a "home away from home" for transplant patients and their families by providing temporary, affordable lodging and supportive services to those who travel to Philadelphia for transplant-related care. A garden was developed for the families staying at the Family House as a place where they could escape into nature.
