We were invited to compete with two other landscapers to design a backyard for Landscapers' Challenge on HGTV. Each of the three landscape designers prepared a plan to present their ideas to the homeowner on national television. We were delighted to learn that they chose our landscape design. Our challenge was to provide a landscape that could extend the outdoor living season within a budget.
It focused on making the existing sunny deck area more private and entertainment friendly. We renovated the deck adding seating and kitchen areas, a spa was placed adjacent to the deck with easy access from the home.

While growing up in Massachusetts I loved being outside in all weather. My career began playing with Tonka trucks in the back yard. When the neighborhood kids' got together we would, rake bike paths and build secret tree forts in the local woods. Family vacations to the seashore, and scouting trips to White Mountains, introduced me the unique range of natural environments here in New England.
The New England Land Design planning philosophy combines listening to you with respecting the environment. This approach results from a process rather than rely on a superior artistic vision. Everyone has different tastes; some folks simply like to observe and live within a landscape and others treat gardening as a relaxing activity, or a quiet retreat.
A design can evolve along many themes, from modern contemporary garden design, to a classic symmetrical balance with focal points. Our landscape planning tends create an organic natural style where we strive to blend your property into the native landscape to create a traditional New England look. Combining your desires with practical problem solving in a balanced composition leads to better results.
Our approach is to maximize your property while minimizing our impact on it. We divide landscaping work into three phases: Sitework, Hardscape and Planting. New England Land Design installers understand this process and approach the work as craftsmen. Our attention to detail will result in great landscaping that improves the visual result and long term durability of the landscape project.

I had problems with all aspects of this company's service. They didn't perform the work as promised and kept changing things without notifying me. They laid patio blocks that were uneven and not properly filled in. The retaining wall blocks are loose and the tops fell within days of paying them. Many of the shrubs died immediately and were never replaced.
Their heavy equipment broke numerous sprinkler heads that they never fixed. They even nicked my underground service cable, knocking out power to my home the first time we experienced a heavy rain - they never accepted any responsibility for anything.

Had problems with this guy from day 1, but tried to give him a chance because he said he would "guarantee all his work". He lied. Not only was he very late getting things done and left us with a mud hole all winter and most of the spring, but he planted shrubs that looked dead when they were planted! Most never recovered and now I can't get the guy to replace them.
He doesn't even respond to my messages! Grass he planted last spring still hasn't come in yet because he used such little seed. Mulched areas are even thin and weeds came up through almost immediately.

This company eventually completed the landscaping work, but took a lot of days off and was late on almost all promises. Some of the shrubs died almost as soon as they were planted and the new lawn was not seeded very well - it came in very thin and weed choked. Now we're trying to get them to fix these issues, but still waiting for them to act. They were supposed to hydro-seed the lawn in the fall (per our contract). It's now mid-November and it still hasn't been done yet.

I paid a lot of money to this guy for landscaping and he did NOT deliver on his promises. The 2-3 week project ended up being 6 months of anguish and muddy lawn because he started the job, then disappeared for two weeks until the snow arrived. About 10% of the shrubs he planted are dead. The patio blocks buckled and separated and now has weeds growing between them.
The grass he planted was sparse and weed choked - mostly with crabgrass. He incorrectly installed lamp posts that shorted out within 3 months and he refuses to accept responsibility for it. He's denied making several statements and promises he told us. It's been 3 months and he hasn't fixed any of the issues I've reported to him - claiming he's 'not responsible' for any of them and wants me to pay him more money to fix them! For landscaping work, find someone else who's honest.
