Winter and Summer aeration are both very important and beneficial, but they are done for different purposes. In the summer, aeration is used for all the above reasons, and most involve boosting the activity of beneficial micro-organisms through increased oxygen levels. In the winter, nearly all these organisms are dormant, so the main reason to aerate is for fish survival. Winter aeration for your pond or water garden is tricky. If you don't do anything, you are likely to lose your fish if your water freezes over for.
A common misconception is that Bluegill stunting is the biggest problem with your average midwestern pond fish population. Once upon a time I beli. If you are concerned with introducing any unwanted species along with your minnows, you may want to consider stocking Tuffies, aka Farm-raised Fath. The Golden Shiner is the largest of the forage species, commonly growing over 5 in length.

I placed an order online over the holiday weekend. Not only was it processed quickly and delivered ahead of schedule, but I also got an added bonus. They were apparently out of the size of fish food I ordered so rather than delay my order they gave me the next larger size up along with a personal note explaining the situation. This was the first time I had ordered from them, but it will not be the last! I love the fact that they took care of it without me even having to ask. They obviously know customer service and value their customers.

We called to inquire on weed prevention. My husband was asking general questions and was met with a rude demeanor by the employee on the phone. He was condescending and certainly not attempting to help or secure business. Granted we may not have had all the details regarding our questions, but we certainly aren't the experts; hence a phone call to them. My husband just hung up. Very disappointed

Keystone Hatcheries is the best! I just started managing a pond with little to no information on how to stock and maintain the fishery. The folks over at Keystone have always had the time to give me the answers I was looking for, and the pond is doing fantastic. I couldn't be happier. Customer service like that just doesn't exist anymore. They'll have my business as long as I own the property.

I've gone to Keystone on several occasions. They have a great selection of aquatic plants but the it's their expertise with all things ponds that keeps me coming back. The owner is a biologist and really knows his stuff. They raise fish for pond stockings so, you know, they kind of have to know their stuff where ponds and aeration systems are concerned.
And they're a family run small business. I like the personal attention but it also means sometimes you have to be patient since they have a small staff. If you are a pond enthusiast in need of help with a pond, fish or plants, go here.

*Great People. Great Resource!* After having a terrible time navigating the regulations for stocking fish in Wisconsin I found this hatchery. Not only were they friendly and quick to respond on questions they made time to deal with what my order which would be considered even by me as a nuisance order. They helped me with the proper paperwork that I had to file to legally stock fish in Wisconsin.
Since they own facilities in both Wisconsin and Illinois they can supply customers in both states. They certainly are experts when it comes to stocking fish. Unfortunately, they were out of stock of the fish pellets that were recommended for my fish so I had to make a separate trip in order to avoid a prohibitive shipping charge (on a small order).
It was only a day later that they had my pellets ready for pickup when I arrived. Great customer service! In the mean time, the slight delay caused me to research fish pellets and I learned an extreme amount of knowledge regarding the nutrition desired. None of the normal sources of fish pellets even came close to the quality of the pellets that they sell. The bottom line is that my aquaponics system is up and running well and the fish are eating like pigs! Great Place! Great People!

These guys are great. Drove out to buy koi for my little pond and they really know their stuff. Felt super comfortable with all of their advice and suggestions. Best part is when I need more fish food or something for my pond, I can buy it from their online store at keystonehatcheries.com instead of making the hour drive from Chicago.
