Hedgerow is a seasonal marketplace near Port Clyde on the St. George Peninsula in midcoast Maine. May through early October we sell our own organically raised produce, prepared food by our local partner, Green Bean Cookhouse, specialty grocery items, and a selection of goods both vintage and modern for home and garden. A small gallery features paintings and award-winning original hooked rugs by Anne Cox along with special shows by a range of Maine artists.
Services
Anne Cox and Julie Wortman founded Hedgerow in 2003, six years after moving to Martinsville, an historic village area on the St. George Peninsula. Led by Cox, who has a Masters of Landscape Architecture from the University of Michigan, Hedgerow was at first primarily a landscape design, installation and gardening-maintenance business with clients located from Islesboro to Waldoboro.
All our produce is organically grown on our property. We concentrate on providing customers with lettuces and other ingredients required for the freshest of salads, but also delight in offering produce ranging from artichokes to potatoes. Large cutting gardens provide plenty of flowers for fresh, long-lasting bouquets.
I started hooking in 2006. And now I am eager for the winter months, which is when the gardens are closed up and I spend time working on my rugs. I like a lot of things about rug hooking. I like the practical aspect of what I do: I am making things that can be used to warm up a floor or be a table runner, for instance.
Visitors are welcome to wander our grounds when Hedgerow is open to the public. Our house, built in the 1820s, is one of the oldest in the area. When we arrived here in 1997 the house and a small shed occupied a site overgrown with multiflora roses and not much else. Over time we built a barn, developed raised-bed vegetable gardens and perennial beds and planted trees and shrubs.

This shop and studio is an absolute delight. There is so much to discover by wandering around. Little hidden crafts of whimsy abound. There is a newer structure holding revolving exhibitions from regional talent. The store has some really beautiful crafts that just bring absolute joy. And yes, there is also some perfect produce that is grown on site.
The owners are a delight, and generously invite you to explore and enjoy their creation. Stop in and you won't be disappointed. Be willing to wander and take in the beauty. I wish I lived close and could come regularly.
